Week 9 Reading Reflection

1) What was the biggest surprise for you in the reading? In other words, what did you read that stood out the most as different from your expectations?

I was surprised to see that irrelevancy was listed as one of the inhibitors to marketing research. I would think that that would fall under the category of common sense. But, obviously, people have different measures of relevant and irrelevant.

2) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.

I found the Freemium Model to be slightly confusing. With further explanation and more examples I would understand the concept better.

3) If you were able to ask two questions to the author, what would you ask? Why?

     a. What do you think is the best way to segment the market?
I would ask this question because it could be beneficial for me in the future.

     b. What do you think is the best pricing model in the social media age?
I would ask this question because I am curious and trust the authors opinion.

4) Was there anything you think the author was wrong about? Where do you disagree with what she or he said? How?

I do not think the author was wrong about anything in this chapter.

My Secret Sauce

1) Describe five ways in which you think you have human capital that is truly unique.

     a. I am extremely organized and write down everything and make many detailed lists so that I never forget to do anything

     b. I am always on time, even early. My biggest pet peeve is when people are late so I always make sure I am on time.

     c. I try to always make rational decisions and take in all sides of the story before coming to a conclusion.

     d. I really care about others feelings and I always try and make everyone happy. I never like to see anyone upset so I always help my friends when they are.

     e. I take my responsibilities very seriously and never give up. I’m always determined to finish anything I take on and don’t stop until I do.

2) Interview the five people who know you the best.

Interview 1
I decided to interview my friend Dom. Dom said that I always make rational decisions.

Interview 2
I decided to interview my friend Risa. She said that I care about others.

Interview 3
I decided to interview my friend Sandra. She said that I am always on time.

Interview 4
I decided to interview my friend Molly. Molly said I am very organized and neat.

Interview 5
I decided to interview my friend Jess. She told me that I am very level headed.

3) Reflect on the differences.

I think that my list and the people I interviewed reflect very similar characteristics. Both said that I am organized, on time, and rational. Since they were so similar I would not add anything to my list.

Idea Napkin No. 2

1) You. Who you are. What your talents are. What your skills and experiences are. Also: what are your aspirations? Specifically regarding your business concept, how do you see this business (if you were to start it) playing a role in your life?

I am Juliana and I am a Finance major and an Entrepreneurship minor. I am very organized and detail oriented. I am better at crunching numbers and computing statistics than being creative, however, I believe my idea is useful. Even if I don't end up developing this app myself, I hope someone does because I really believe it is beneficial.

2) What are you offering to customers? Describe the product or service (in other words, how you'll solve customers' unmet needs).

There have been so many instances where my friends, family, and I see a famous person and recognize them, but not be able to recall their name. It can be a celebrity you see in person, on TV, or in an advertisement, anywhere. This app will allow you to take a picture of the celebrity's face, upload the picture to the app, and then the app will search the internet for you and provide you with the name of that person. This app allows you to find out who the famous person is immediately without having to come up with something about them to type into google.

3) Who are you offering it to? Describe, in as much detail as possible, the demographic and psychographic characteristics of your customers. Think especially of this question: what do your customers all have in common?

I am offering this app to anybody who is interested in pop culture. If you have no interest in knowing who famous people are, then this app isn't for you. However, most people in today's world pay attention to pop culture or at least want to know celebrities names. Therefore, anyone can use my app. The main characteristic my customers have in common is their interest in pop culture and desire to put a name to a face.

4) Why do they care? Your solution is only valuable insofar as customers believe its valuable to them. Here, explain why customers will actually pay you money to use your product or service.

I believe customers would pay money to use my app because for $1.29 your uncertainty can be answered. I know for me and my friends, I can't stop thinking about that person until I can come up with their name. If not, it will bug me forever. Therefore, I believe people will buy and use this app. Additionally, the majority of the people I have interviewed, spoken to, and those who have commented on my blog, have said they would definitely use this app.

5) What are your core competencies? What sets you apart from everyone else? Also: what do you have that nobody else has?

An app like this doesn't exist. There are many website and apps that allow you to type in a question and it will spit out an answer, but none let you upload a picture. Therefore, I believe this app is different and innovative and will succeed. Also, once the algorithm to make this app work is designed I will file for a patent so that no one can steal my idea.

I believe these 5 aspects mesh well together and that this app (CelebMe) has a chance at succeeding. My app is realistic enough to be successful and I definitely think it would be used frequently. With the proper funds, technology, and advertisement I think it can be achieved and successful.

Feedback Memo

     1. Catchy name for the app
     2. Need to clarify the purpose as it does more than google allows you to
     3. Must file for a patent
     4. Unique solution to a problem
     5. Make sure to charge for the app in order to raise capital

I incorporated the feedback I received into questions 2-5. I clarified my purpose, mentioned that I will file for a patent, and acknowledged the problem that is being solved.
